3 Tips To Keep Your Boiler Running Properly

Having your boiler go out on you in the middle of winter can be awful. Your boiler is your number one source of hot water and heat during the colder months of the year. That's why it's so important to make sure you are performing regular maintenance on your boiler throughout the year so that there is no need to call a boiler repair specialist when the temperature is below freezing. Here are a few maintenance tips that every boiler owner should keep in mind.

Clean Air Vents Regularly

As boilers operate, dirt and dust may accumulate in the venting system or the flues. If enough dirt gets stuck in this area, you will end up with a blockage that could take your whole system down. Inspect and clean your vents at least once a month while the boiler is seeing heavy use.

Water Supply

It is critical that your boiler's water supply be maintained at the correct level. If your water level drops too low and then your boiler tries to turn on and operate without the correct supply, it could cause extensive damage, possibly requiring a brand new boiler instead of just a repair job. Inspect the water level every few months and make sure everything is working properly.

Descaling is Key

Do you have a hard water supply? If so, you will want to pay special attention to any accumulation of scaling within the boiler. Lime scale can build up over time even with water that is not as hard. If your boiler has not been descaled in a while, the scales could be significantly impacting the efficiency of the boiler. Ask your boiler maintenance service to include descaling in their regular maintenance tasks if necessary.

Add Fresh Water Every Six Months

It's not a bad idea to do a complete flush on your boiler, completely removing all of the water and inserting a fresh supply a couple of times a year. This will allow you to inspect the boiler in detail and notice any other problems. The best time to do this would be after the winter is over, and then again in late fall before winter returns.

If you want to keep your boiler in good condition, make sure you or a boiler repair specialist is performing maintenance on a regular basis. Keep your air vents clear, your water at the correct level, and don't hesitate to flush the water a couple of times a year and then descale the boiler if needed.
